Alternative texts are crucial to making websites and documents accessible to people with visual impairments. Screen readers used by blind and visually impaired people can capture and read aloud the Contents of images through the alternative texts.

Alternative text is a descriptive text that conveys the meaning of an image or other visual representation and is used to make Contents accessible to people with visual impairments by being read aloud by screen readers.
Preferences: Set folder view ¶
For a better overview of which of your media already have alternative texts, you can make the following settings once
- In the file list, go to the folder that you want to check for alternative texts.
- Click the "Show columns" button on the right-hand side
- Select the "Alternative text" option in the window
- In the folder view, the alt texts are now visible where available
New media are uploaded ¶
- In the file list, select the folder to which you want to upload the medium
- Click the "Upload file" button, select the medium, upload
- After uploading, TYPO3 automatically offers a reload of the folder view (blue message window on the right)
- Only then are the 4 editing buttons and the preview image of this medium visible

-use the "pencil" icon to customize the alternative text as follows or
- generate the text with AI beforehand
Formulate alternative text ¶
What can be seen in the picture?
Where: File list-> Folder -> Media are listed one below the other
- Click with the right mouse button on the "Eye" symbol
- Select "Copy address of Links"
- Paste this image address into a browser window and you can view the image in its original size
- and /or you enter this image address in an AI tool
Note: No more than one or two short sentences, no novels, no technical terms, just describe what the eyes see in the picture.
Generate text with AI tool ¶
- Open the KI Tool in the browser
- Select "Insert URL" under Source in the tool.
- Copy the image address into the tool
- The tool generates an alternative text, which you can correct or add to.
Enter alternative text in TYPO3 ¶
Where: File list-> Folder -> Media are listed one below the other
- Click on the "pencil" icon to edit the metadata

Enter the text under Accessibility -> "Alternative text", save

Other languages
After saving the German text, you can change the language at the top left and enter additional languages in the alternative text field.


Check alternative text on the website online ¶
You can use another tool:
Simply dragthe bookmarklet into the bookmarks bar.
In Firefox, you can right-click the bookmarklet and select "Add bookmark for Links." In other browsers, if you haven't already done so, you can show the bookmarks toolbar, in Edge it is called the favorites bar, and then simply drag the bookmarklet into the bar with the mouse.

- Open the page in the browser that you want to check for alternative texts
- Click on the bookmarklet from your bookmark bar
- No new page will be opened, but the alternative texts will be displayed on the existing page; this also works without web access.
